Rules

How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

Under 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2, at least 5% of portable toilets in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than one. A cluster of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit; a cluster of 21 needs 2.

Source: U.S. Access Board, 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. Ask your venue or permit office to confirm what applies.
Units in a clusterAccessible units required (5%, rounded up)

21–402

61–804

The legal minimum covers each cluster. Our recommendation: put the accessible unit closest to parking, on firm, level ground with a clear, smooth route. Grass is fine when dry; gravel and mud are hard for wheelchairs.

Original call data

Why do renters add an accessible unit?

Accessible units came up in 10 of 173 rental calls we reviewed. Most callers wanted one accessible unit beside one or two standard units — a church event, a reunion with older relatives, or a public gathering. Price was the main surprise, because accessible units cost more than standard ones.

A practical setup we see often: one wheelchair-accessible unit plus one standard unit and a hand-wash station for a 60–90 guest church or family event.

FAQ

Wheelchair-accessible unit questions

Is your accessible porta potty ADA-compliant?

We describe it as wheelchair-accessible: ground-level floor, grab bars and a turning space of about 60 inches, as ADA guidelines describe. Whether your site complies also depends on a firm, level route to the unit.

Do I need an accessible unit for a private party?

Not by law at a private home, but add one if any guest uses a wheelchair, walker or cane. It also gives parents room to help small children.

Will an accessible unit fit in my backyard?

It needs about a 7.5-by-7.5-foot level spot and a wide path. Many side gates are too narrow; we may need to place it in the driveway.

Is an accessible unit cleaned the same way?

Yes. It is pumped, scrubbed and restocked weekly on long rentals.

Can a job site use an accessible unit?

Yes. Many crews keep one accessible unit for workers with injuries or for public-facing sites.
