How many porta potties do I need for my guest count?
You need one standard porta potty for every 50 guests at a four-hour event. Add one unit per 100 guests for each extra four hours, add one unit per 100 guests when alcohol is served, and make at least 5% of units in each cluster wheelchair-accessible for public events.
The steps above are how our dispatch desk sizes events. They match what a standard 60-gallon unit can handle — roughly 200 to 250 uses before it needs pumping — and the “one unit per 50 people” rule agents quoted on our recorded calls.
Porta potty chart for events by guests and hours
A 100-guest, four-hour event needs 2 standard porta potties. A 150-guest, five-hour wedding with a bar needs 7 units. A 250-guest, eight-hour event needs 8 units before alcohol. Use the chart, then add alcohol and accessibility steps.
| Guests | Up to 4 hrs | 5–8 hrs | 9–12 hrs | + alcohol | Hand-wash (food) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 2 | 3 | +1 | 1 |
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 3 | +1 | 1 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 4 | +1 | 1 |
| 150 | 3 | 5 | 7 | +2 | 2 |
| 200 | 4 | 6 | 8 | +2 | 2 |
| 250 | 5 | 8 | 11 | +3 | 3 |
| 300 | 6 | 9 | 12 | +3 | 3 |
| 500 | 10 | 15 | 20 | +5 | 5 |
Worked example: 150-guest wedding, 5 hours, bar
- Base: 150 ÷ 50 = 3 units.
- Hours: 5 hours is 1 hour past 4, so add 1 unit per 100 guests: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5, rounded up to 2. Now 5.
- Alcohol: add 1 per 100 guests: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5, rounded up to 2. Total: 7 units.
- Accessible: make 1 of the 7 a wheelchair-accessible unit.
- Hand-wash: dinner is served, so add 2 stations (150 ÷ 100, rounded up).
Using a restroom trailer? Count each trailer stall as 2 units, because a trailer's waste tank is far larger than a porta potty's 60 gallons. For the 7-unit wedding above, one two-stall trailer (4) plus 3 deluxe units covers it.
How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 requires one toilet for 20 or fewer workers, one seat plus one urinal per 40 workers from 20 to 199, and one seat plus one urinal per 50 workers at 200 or more. With weekly service, we recommend one unit per 10 workers.
| Workers | OSHA minimum | Recommended, weekly service | Recommended, twice weekly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 20 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 4 | 3 |
| 60 | 2 + 2 | 6 | 4 |
| 100 | 3 + 3 | 10 | 7 |
| 200 | 4 + 4 | 20 | 14 |
Farms: OSHA 1928.110 requires one toilet and one hand-wash facility per 20 field workers within a quarter-mile walk. Public events: ADA 213.2 requires at least 5% accessible units in each cluster.
How many units do real renters book?
In 173 recorded rental calls, 92% of event renters needed only one or two units, and two-thirds needed just one. Stated crowds ranged from 15 to 140 guests for private events. The biggest single request was a 463-resident evacuation shelter, which needs about 19 to 23 toilets.
That's why our calculator starts small: most backyard parties, reunions and church events need one unit plus, if food is served, a hand-wash station. Plan an event rental · Plan a job-site rental · Add an accessible unit.
