Backyard Party Porta Potty Checklist
Two-thirds of the event renters on our calls needed a single unit for a backyard party. Here's how to get that one unit right.

How many units for a backyard party?
Plan one standard porta potty per 50 guests for up to four hours. Count indoor bathrooms too: if guests can use one indoor restroom, one outdoor unit covers most parties up to about 100 guests. Add a unit if the party runs long or there's beer.
Will it fit through my gate?
A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide. A 48-inch gate is ideal; slightly narrower gates may work if the crew can tilt the unit. If your gate is under 40 inches, plan on the driveway or front side yard instead.
Where should it go?
Put the unit on flat, firm ground, in shade, at least 10 feet from doors and windows, downwind of food, and away from septic lids and sprinkler heads. Point the door away from the main seating area and toward a lit path.
- Measure the gate.
- Pick and mark the spot. Cone, flag or spray-paint X.
- Book delivery the day before. Free for weekend events.
- Add a hand-wash station if food is served.
- After the party, close the door and keep the path clear for Monday pickup.
What should I tell the dispatcher when I book?
Tell the dispatcher five things when you book a backyard party unit: the address and gate width, the event date and start time, the guest count and hours, whether food or alcohol is served, and where the unit should stand. Those details set the unit count, delivery day and placement.
Our placement FAQ covers slopes, grass, pavers and narrow gates.
