Septic System Failed? How to Rent a Porta Potty During Repairs

Rural homes across Victoria, DeWitt, Goliad and Jackson counties run on septic. When one fails, here's how to keep the house usable during repairs.

What do I do first when my septic fails?

First, stop flushing indoor toilets and running water into drains. Second, call a licensed septic contractor. Third, rent a porta potty for the repair window — most septic repairs and replacements take one to four weeks.

Where should the porta potty go?

Place the porta potty near the driveway, on firm ground, well away from the septic tank, the drain field and the repair crew's digging area. Our service truck needs to reach it every week, and the septic crew needs room for equipment.

How long and how much?

A 28-day rental covers most septic jobs. In Victoria, a standard unit starts at $199 per 28-day cycle with weekly pumping and cleaning, plus a one-time $49 delivery fee. Add a hand-wash station from $149 if the kitchen sink is also out.

Same-day delivery is available when you call by noon. In our call review, septic emergencies were 8 of 173 calls — and two of those callers lost time because their first company had no weekend drivers.

How do I keep the house usable while the septic is out?

Keep the house usable during a septic repair by moving toilet use to a porta potty, limiting sinks, showers and laundry to what your septic contractor allows, and adding a hand-wash station if the kitchen sink is off-limits. Most families of four do fine with one standard unit serviced weekly.

If a family member uses a wheelchair or walker, rent a wheelchair-accessible unit instead. Want a sink and flush? Choose a deluxe unit.
